The almond fruit is classed botanically as a drupe, with a pubescent exocarp (skin), a fleshy but thin mesocarp (hull), and a distinct hardened endocarp (shell). The mesocarp undergoes only limited enlargement during development, becoming dry and leathery, and dehiscing at maturity.
